Not really here anymore

Once upon a time, Livejournal was the place to be. Those days are gone. Almost none of my friends post anything on here anymore. Almost nobody does, period, and most of those who do crosspost to another site. Yeah, not sure why it happened, but it seems (at least from overhearing my wife) that livejournal isn't really for the casual ranter anymore. For one reason or another it's where authors/publishers go to rant, post their daily musings, and whatnot.

And I've certainly fallen victim to it myself. I can claim that I don't have the time to post daily or even weekly like I used to, but I guess in the end, LJ didn't keep up with the times. I post occasionaly and once in a great while when I'm daring try to get something more regular going, but they end up failing. Guess LJ isn't the media outlet it used to be.

There have been a bunch of situations, spread out over years, that LJ handled poorly. The first that I remember was when the company was pressured to eliminate any mention of child pornography on the site. The resultant purge included, amongst other things, communities for survivors of child abuse.

The elimination of new free accounts didn't help. (You and anyone who reads you getting bombarded with ads =/= free.)

I think authors have stuck around in part because the obvious alternatives of Facebook and Twitter are not conducive to the kind of long, thoughtful writing many of them want to do.
