Begin as you mean to go on

According to various superstitions, how you start the year sets the tone for the next 12 months.

I began the year last night surrounded by friends, laughing.

I began today hanging around with my family, relaxing. In while, we'll be seeing friends again, at a new year's day brunch.

Hope the superstition is correct, at least for me.

Here we say a fine dinner on January 1st means food on the table all year - a simpler version of the superstition.

We are expecting a full table all year... (Today we had roast goose, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, peas, spiced red cabbage, two sorts of stuffing, sausages in bacon... and pears poached in wine.)

I ate my black eyed peas and burned my bayberry candle this morning when I got up. (and, significantly, SallyCat also ate some black eyed peas.) Then I went and visited my folks, did the Sunday puzzle with my Mom, had a great dinner and watched some television. Came home and talked with my new upstairs neighbor.

It was a pleasant day. I could use a pleasant year.

Happy New Year to you, dear, and to your family and friends.

I spent New Year's Eve hanging out, watching TV, and writing. I spent today writing, reading fic, and hanging out with friends doing a crafty project. I hope this trend continues.
