The Curse of Chalion, for reals. It's like my / my mom's all time favorite. There are others in the world but it's a one-off with optional other books you can read if you want.
I only read classics, YA, and a sprinkling of fantasy, so I'm usually pretty terrible with book recs. BUT, I'll still give you my top three for someone who needs something "pretty and well-written."
1. Pride and Prejudice - you've probably already read it, but I could this shit 100 times and never get sick of it! 2. Song for the Basilisk - a fantasy novel with intrigue and love and magic and a lot of fucking music. 3. Snow Falling on Cedars - again, don't know if you've already read it, but an amazing fucking book. If you love non-linear story lines, history, tragic romance, and the Japanese psyche, I thumbs up it.
I love Jane Austen, and debating picking up one of hers again, because most of my exploration of new books has not yielded much I actually enjoyed. But I tend to get stuck watching the same movies and reading the same books over and over and over (buying the same ones, too... I think I have 5 copies of P&P, because some of them were too pretty to resist), so I'm gonna try and wait on that one. Maybe do my annual re-read over Christmas or something. :)
I read those about two months ago and was kind of displeased. I did read them all really quickly, and liked the first one okay, but then they went off the rails. I found the plots of the sequels really hard to swallow and absolutely hated all the love triangle stuff. I'll still give that first one some originality points, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the movie does with it, but those books are part of the reason I'm kind of done with series for a little while.
