I have to admit, I actually enjoyed the whole school thing. It isn't something I've ever done before. We're taught things, of course, but not in such a... large group. Usually, the Hold's Harper teaches the Hold's children by way of singing and such. There are no books or writing utensils and truthfully, most children on Pern don't learn to read or ( Read more... )

Singing is how Hold children are taught the most basic of subjects. Things like history and such. Everyone has enough knowledge to write simple things but anything more than just their name and things to help the Hold run smoothly? Never. Especially not girls.

Oh, I see... I guess learning songs about historical events is more fun than memorising, but...

Why are girls taught less?

And in learning those songs, they learn what they need to learn.

... girls are expected to marry decently and strengthen Hold ties, or go to work in Craft Halls, where they'd be taught whatever else they needed to know. We're really only taught the very basics.

Perhaps a bit too structured. I'm not sure. I think it's just because it was so odd for me.
