I've read things like this before, and I understand the argument, but the framing of it annoys me. isn't the real point that you should stop thinking it's okay to eat strawberries whenever you want? I can't even take the part about cut flowers seriously because no environmentalist in their right mind would buy conventionally grown roses.
I also think there are plenty of reasons that local food IS better for the environment beyond the transportation and the energy input / CO2 output. that large-farm efficiency comes at the huge expense of a more sustainable polyculture, for example.
I agree, but that's not how the arguments are usually presented to the public. The public only hears that x is good for y therefore you should do it! Without ever looking at the big picture. You can't go around ignoring that and expect people to take you seriously. That's been the biggest problem with many people who claim to be environmentalists in my opinion.
I agree with you on the idea of sustainable polyculture and other items connected with all this. Sadly, most people don't look at the big picture. Or in some cases, you simply can't follow some of these ideals based on where you live and some changes/sacrifices need to be made.

I agree with you on the idea of sustainable polyculture and other items connected with all this. Sadly, most people don't look at the big picture. Or in some cases, you simply can't follow some of these ideals based on where you live and some changes/sacrifices need to be made.
