Is it me.

Or has the singularity started?

A slow takeoff one that is...

SSD and solar techs are basically exploding and augmented reality technologies that aren't dumb are coming out this fall.

And we're technically in a recession still.

Hard takeoff by 2016?

Thoughts?

The definition of a singularity is a single point in time when it all changes at once. What you are describing isn't that.

That is also not what most people mean by "the singularity". :) If everything's completely different in 20 years, not being able to pinpoint any single point in time when everything changed doesn't mean we didn't go through a singularity from the point of view pastward of it.

You're taking "point" too literally.

No big breakthrough in A.I., brain modeling or even nerve network modeling.
I would not hold my breath.

Sorry I just saw the post on the silicon chips modeling nerve networks...cool!

And there is also the Blue Brain Project and Intellligence Realm (though their site seems to be down for a while)

Not to mention the IBM project on creating an AI to play Jeopardy.

Please tell me some more about solar tech "exploding". Bonus points for actual _deployments_. My great worry for the last several years has been that we will simply run out of cheap energy and fall into a hideous Malthusian pit, and unfortunately I haven't seen any really strong evidence that this is not the most likely course of events.

See-Through Solar Hack Could Double Panel Efficiency

Solar Power Game-Changer: “Near Perfect” Absorption of Sunlight, From All Angles

Fair to point out that these are not deployments, but they will be soon. These are exciting developments which will hopefully get us off the fossil fuels Titanic, but none of it proves OP's point.

Superb. I wish I could shake the hand of the guys who do this research.

I also find it encouraging that at least some alt-energy companies seem to have survived the crash in oil prices... Nanosolar seems to still be moving along nicely.

Harvesting the sun is like free money if it's efficient enough.
