Raimi didn't come here for the food. As a matter in fact, he's not even eating anything, unless if you count cigarettes and Bacardi as sustenance.

If it was one thing Raimi found himself thankful for, it was Puerto Rican rum.

It was totally legit.

While others mingle off in the distance, he decidedly popped a squat further off to his own devices, sitting cross-legged on the beach in front of a laptop.

Since Peggy's sort of mingling around and on the edges herself, she ends up walking past. "Not one for the festivities?"

Raimi worked while he talked, with rows upon row of code, seemingly nonsensical to some, on the screen before him. "Not particularly. But it's an excuse to get out of my apartment."

A necessary excuse, when you had a giant robot stalker taking up residency in your space. Seriously, what was he thinking?

"Is that the sort of thing that needs an excuse?" she asks, glancing at whatever he has but not understanding the slightest bit of it. And then she pauses. "My apologies if that came across as intrusive."

"Depends on who you're talking to." Raimi has known a fair share of possessive, invasive individuals.

He didn't bother trying to hide his progress on the laptop. He already figured that most around here couldn't read most of the codes that he worked with.

Judging by the look on her face, he figured that he was correct in that assumption this time as well.

"Not at all. I'm just finishing up some work that I've been doing."

"Fair point."

She nods. "I don't even know what is is you've got there to be working with regardless, if it helps."

"It's a beta for a project I've been developing. I'm a software engineer, but since coming here, I realize that there's a lot that I still don't know -- or understand. So I decided to start with a prototype of some artificial intelligence and build my way up from scratch before I decide I start messing with anything major."

Because that totally didn't sound shady at all. But Raimi figured that at least Yes Man could benefit from it.

Her eyebrows quirk in slight confusion. Sounding shady? Peggy doesn't even know what he's talking about enough to consider it shady. "I'm sorry, but I don't know what a software engineer is. Or rather, I suppose, just software."

"...right."

Suppose it would have helped had the other party any inkling as to what he was talking about.

"You know that thing on your wrist? Where I'm from, it was my job to help construct devices like that."

Except that instead of helpful computers you wear on your wrist, it was tracking software that also served as a honing mechanism for extremely low frequencies.

Raimi had his work cut out for him here.

She looks down at the wearable for a moment, before back towards him, nodding. She might not understand how it works, but one of her closest friends was an engineer in a similar sense. The construction of similar things, that much she can grasp.

"So it relates to the innards of a computer and similar devices. That sort of technology has never been my forte, so my understanding is quite limited. But it's good to know the word."

Raimi's eyes never stray once from the laptop monitor, but he doesn't need to in order to know that she got the picture.

"Exactly. The hardware is just equipment without the software to run on it. That's where people like me come in." He finally minimizes the window consisting of good bulk of his progress, taking a brief respite in order to snuff out his cigarette in the sand. "I guess we all have our fortes around here. I'm not good with guns and fighting, so I just stick to what I know best."

She nods in understanding. "That part is where I'm best--the guns and fighting--but all aspects are highly important to success. Or if not success in a team sense, important overall."

Surprised?

Raimi was not.

"Seem we've got a whole crew of capable fighters on board around here. Makes you wonder if Hypatia was trying to build herself an army for something." He would probably sound more paranoid if he wasn't so matter-of-fact about it.

That's something she hadn't entertained before. "The idea is rather plausible, given the state of the station and kinds of people here." How willing said army would be was another story.

Knowing the kinds of people present, Raimi was also quite sure it would have been a failed endeavor as well. Lots of stubborn people.

"I've entertained the notion from time to time, though I honestly can't say why we're here. To fight, to be experimented on... Maybe there is no reason." What a grim thought.

"There must be some purpose, no matter how dark or even inconsequential. Although it doesn't seem like anyone really knows, or the reason would be fairly widespread. At least I assume it would be, given the nature and accessibility of communication here."
