To love your friends is to care dearly about them, not wanting harm to befall them, and generally wanting to spend time with them.
However, to love someone in a romantic sense is to do and feel the aforementioned points for them, coupled with wishing to spend and share your life with them. They become one of the most important things to you, someone you'd gladly choose to spend time with over others if forced with a choice.
While you would hurt to lose friends, you're able to move on. If you're in love with someone though, it would feel as though if you lost them...you'd be lost forever. They're an integral part of your life, your better half as some will call it.
