Why is it that firms stop making stuff that was actually good? Two cases in point.

1) The Nokia 6310 and 6310i GSM Cell / Mobile phones. OK, so they were fairly large by modern standards but they had a 3 week standby time, excellent reception and they worked practically anywhere in the world. The business world ran by this phone, when Nokia ( Read more... )

3) VW Golf GTi Mk II 8v Digifant - 125mph, 0-60 in 8.5 seconds, seats 5, looks nice, safe (for the era, which if cars hadn't all become battering rams would still be safe now), 45mpg average and 300,000 miles typical lifespan for the engine...

Indeed - cars are a special type of crazy in this regard. It goes the other way, too, if you've noticed. Take the Austin Metro / Rover 100. It was crap to begin with, but they made it for must be nearly 20 years.

1980 to 1998; and the only reason it was killed in 1998 was because the Euro NCAP results showed it to be 'quite dangerous' - they don't take into account active safety features like visibility, handling - only "what if it hits something ( ... )

I s'pose visibility in the Metro was good - there was very little metalwork to get in the way! That does annoy me about modern cars, mine isn't too bad but I'm still bobbing around like an idiot when approaching a roundabout to try and see through a large chunk of steel ( ... )
