Five questions from birdfigment

1. Are you more likely to try doing something new, or practice doing something you've done before and enjoyed?

I do very much like being in comfort zone, so i'm usually more likely to do something familiar. I don't know that I necessarily practice it actively, like in an attempt to get better.. The exception tends to be in meta-things that I have experience in already. For example, I wouldn't shy away from trying a new game or cheap restaurant because I've tried new things before and it was cool. I might prefer a game i new already because it was a known quantity, but this is usually how i get my adventure. I would be less likely to try something further outside the box, like some travelling is scary to me because of it's foreign nature, whereas I'm more likely to spend the same money to go to San Francisco or somewhere I know I like. That's where I can use fayde as an adventure-crutch.

2. What do you find most engaging and fulfilling about running a game?

Participation and enjoyment. I tend towards being a performer and enjoy receiving back enjoyment from participants. Wow-ing or surprising people is the most fulfilling possible outcome. This has probably occured most in the playtest for "A Matter of Time" where everyone sat around afterward talking about how much of a mindgame the ending was, and the Superheroes games at Con. One of the players this year brought her notes/jokes/comments from last year that she had made. It was awesome to remember those jokes and lines, but also awesome to know that I gave someone such a memorable experience.

3. What was the first thing you remember making you fall for fayde?

It wasn't really like that since we'd known each other for so long. But I think we recognized compatability and then had little things. At one point someone commented that we laughed a lot together and i was like, "Yeah, we really do." And then I noticed it more. It all compounded, there was some scary stuff in 2006, she helped me when I was quitting smoking, acting like a baby duck. All these things added together to form the whole. I think our first really, really romantic time together was in Seattle on the pier/ferry ride back. Traveling together I think iced the deal.

4. No-holds-barred cage match between Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax - who wins & why?

In an actual fight, my money is on Anthrax simply because there are five of them. I also think that despite being a joker, Ian is probably the real deal in a fight. The slayer guys may actually be hard, but they've always struck me as satanic music nerds rather than real hard edged dudes. I think the X Factor is whether or not Mustaine fires everyone in the band (again) and replaces them with ultimate fighters.

In a musical battle, it becomes harder. Metallica has 20% of my top ten favorite albums. Although none of them have been released in the last 25 years (weird isn't it?). Megadeth hasn't entered the list for 19 years. Slayer and Anthrax have no items on the list, but I really like some of the songs they've produced more recently. However, I think Anthrax is too inconsistent.

I will break this tie by comparing bands to soda. Metallica is like DR Pepper. I used to love it and it was the best, but the formula is radically different now and I just don't like it anymore. Megadeth is 7Up. It's good, but you don't want to have it all the time. It's changed, but is still okay in the new formula. But all in all, sometimes you're like "dude, I just want a coke." Anthrax is like some kind of homegrown soda. Sometimes its awesome, and sometimes they just screwed up the formula. Slayer is the A&W root beer of these bands. It's mood sensitive, but always the same. you know exactly what you're going to get with any given effort. And it's great with ice cream. If someone walked up to me and said, "pick one of these bands and we will play a random song by them," i would feel most comfortable picking Slayer in terms of what I would actually get. Though i'd be more likely to be surprised and happy, or wildly disappointed if i got the right or wrong Metallica, Megadeth or Anthrax song.

5. What's your favorite recipe to share with people? Where did you get the recipe from?

I don't seek out recipe sharing, so I haven't shared that many. Probably my falafel just because a fair number of people have had it and asked. That recipe is a composite of various internet recipes.

Now, long ago there was an effort at my work to make a christmas gift for customers which was a cookbook. So I have three recipes in that book that I have technically "shared" and they're my a-game dishes: the jerk tenderloin, jamaica patties, and my salsa. I don't know if anyone uses them, but they are out there. Tenderloin was from Buffet magazine. Jamaica Patties were from the Habanero cookbook. My salsa is from the depths of my brain and heart. Fear it.
