Road's eyes gleamed when she saw a tiny little black kitten mewing in her family's garden. The bottom of her dress brushed the ground as she crouched down, awed at the cute little animal. "Road, what are you looking at?" The girl looked up and smiled at her mother that had come with a few servants trailing behind the sickly woman, one carrying a parasol.
"A kitten got into our garden," Road replied turning her attention back to the animal who was sitting there obdiently staring at Road. A flicker of
something animalistic crossed her face, but it was gone as she picked up the kitten and held it up to her mother. "May I please keep him, mother?" The woman smiled softly at the kitten giving it a pet on the head before answering.
"I'm not sure...Perhaps you should ask your-,"
"Father wouldn't mind! " Road interjected Tricia holding the kitten close to her and making her puppy dog eyes as her mother relented and smiled.
"Very well then. Bring him back to the house and we'll get the servants to get him a saucer of milk. He must be famished." Road threw her arms around her mother as best she could with the kitten in her hand before rushing off back to the mansion.
"We're going to have so much fun, kitty." And despite Road's sugary sweet voice, it didn't match the sadistic grin on her face.
-A few weeks later-
An ear piercing scream cut through the air outside and Tricia, Road and Cyril looked up from there tea on the patio. A look of curiosity passed between Cyril and Road, but she just shrugged it off and hopped off her chair, running over to where the scream had come from. Road had already found herself beside the horrifed gardener who had screamed when her mother and father had caught up. Road looked at the scene with her wide eyes as she edged closer to the scene, no emotion showing on her face.
The black kitten that had been found a few weeks earlier was dead, its head smashed in, and one of its eyes looking like it had been gouged out with blood staining the green lawn underneath. It's once glossy black fur had torn out in place revealing the bloody, flesh underneath and Road couldn't help but grin slightly at the gleaming whtie bone jutting out of the cat's hind leg. Tricia placed a hand to her mouth, and pulled Road into her embrace. "Oh...darling, I'm so sorry. We could get you a new one..." Road stared at the cat a moment longer, before tears were welling up in her eyes as she buried her face into the folds of her mother's skirt.
"B-but I've only had him for a few weeks! I-I can't believe that this would happen to him! Why would anyone do that to a poor kitten?" Cyril stared at the kitten before pulling both his wife and Road into a hug and leading them back towards the mansion after telling the gardener to dispose of the kitten's body. He pulled Road in and spoke to her in a soothing tone,
"Your mother's right, Road. We could get you a new one, a much prettier one."
And as they walked away, Road looked back a moment, watching as the gardener prepared to remove the lifeless body. Although tears were still running down her cheeks, Road's mouth was curled into a blood thirsty smile and her eyes glinted with pleasure before her mother's hand brought her back to reality. She sniffled a few more times for good measure before grabbing the hands of her parents into the house.
