The Legend of 1900 is one of my favorite movies, and most people seem to have never heard about it. Tim Roth, one of my favorite actors, plays a guy who's found abandoned as a baby on a trans-Atlantic passenger ship in January 1900. An engine room worker finds him, gives him the rather unwieldy name Danny Boodmann T.D. Lemon Nineteen Hundred (1900 for short), and raises him. The kid grows up on the ship and never leaves it his entire life. Oh, and he's a piano prodigy, too. I know it doesn't sound realistic, but it's not supposed to; the director calls it a "fable," which very much describes the feel of the film. It's pretty episodic in its development, sweet and thought-provoking, with great music--and Roth is just perfect for the role, someone who seems nice and easygoing but is somehow just a little bit weird. The best scene, IMO, is the "piano duel" between 1900 and Jelly Roll Morton--it's just the most completely badass scene ever ( ... )
