There's something magical about the fact that we can have a 100+ comment thread on whether or not you like character A, and despite wildly different opinions, there's no bashing, fighting or inanity.
Eh, compared to what I know can happen, that argument the model of civility. There's a world of difference between a spirited disagreement and a flamewar.
Egh, well, I just got the, "It must be nice to be friends with the mods and get to do whatever you want" routine, so if I ever do lose my composure, you or metaraymek should feel free to kick my ass back into line. Not that I think you need to be told that, mind you, but the insinuation that I only have you guys on my flist to get some kind of special treatment does piss me off to no end.
But for the most part, I was really surprised at the overall reaction. I remember somebody did a "Why does everyone hate Ashley?"-esque post a while back, and that turned out pretty good too.
I guess accusations of favoritism are inescapable, since at least a few people are *always* going to assume there's bias involved, no matter how hard we try. Besides which... once it's PMs, it's between the people involved and no longer concerns me as a mod. That's kinda the point of going to PMs. I take care of the community- people yelling at each other on their own time isn't my responsibility.
Quite frankly I think everyone involved was bringing in their own character biases. Taking it to PMs was the best decision under that circumstance, because it was degenerating into the usual labyrinth of semantics and assumptions about someone's intent. Those are the event horizon of conversation after which there is (usually) no escape.

I really wonder if a thread about Jack would do half as well, though.
