Backing up LJ

May 08, 2009 15:42

Is there any way to back up LJ archives (on, say, Dreamwidth or elsewhere) so that if it goes poof, all is not lost?

Yes, I know about LJ-Book, which I keep reminding myself to use again, but it would be nice to have an e-copy.

dreamwidth, lj

I use ljArchive, which isn't perfect (sadly, that can't be said of any LiveJournal backup tool), but does at least save a reasonable electronic version. It also saves comments, which not all the others do.

It's also already installed on the machine in question...

That would certainly add to its appeal. :)

You can import your LJ to Dreamwidth with no trouble at all. I did mine the other day. But I doubt LJ will go poof too quickly.

I use lj archive and keep a local copy on my machine. Also, you can port it over to say, wordpress or something pretty easily, just for archive's sake.

If you've got a Dreamwidth account, their import thing works BEAUTIFULLY! Otherwise, if you want to archive to your hard drive (as far as I know you can't upload afterwards) there's LJ-Archive (which daisho linked to), or if you want to make a backup that's uploadable elsewhere you can use LJSec.

I use LJ Archive too and also ported over to Dreamwidth. Takes about 10 minutes to port to DW.

Takes 5 minutes to run a synch via LJ Archive though it can take a while the first time you run it.

I have not imported into WP before, but you're certainly welcome to look at the tools for that. I can set up another WP copy for you if you'd like so there's no risk of issues with your existing WP install.
