Half-Price

Lew stands by his locker, tired but strangely unwilling to pack up and head home. It was a late night; they'd had two calls come in right after the other, domestic disturbances both. Everyone was alive at the end so it could've been worse, but Lew's thinking about the women and kids, brave smiles despite their terrified eyes.

Even with their high volume of calls, Lew always finds out what happens to the people after the SRU leaves. Even if he doesn't like what he hears.

She dropped the charges. Told the officer it was her fault, he didn't mean to do it. Guy moved back in last week.

"Hey, man."

Spike's voice shakes Lew out of his thoughts. "Hey. Why're you still here?"

Spike gives an easy smile. "Messing around with some equipment. Tune-ups, y'know. What about you?"

Lew shrugs. "Just wasn't ready to go home, I guess."

"Job got you down today?" Spike asks perceptively. Lew's a quiet kind of guy, but somehow Spike always knows when it's out-of-the-ordinary quiet. Lew thinks it's a weird talent for a guy who talks as much as Spike to have, but he's grateful nonetheless.

"Yeah, I guess. Makes me mad, why do people do this? Especially to their kids." Lew slams his locker a little too hard.

Spike doesn't offer any answers, because there really aren't any to give. He just claps Lew on the shoulder and says, "You wanna go get a beer? They got half-price wings at Dempsey's."

Something about Spike always puts Lew in a good mood. Maybe it's his relentless cheerfulness, or his thousands of terrible puns, or the fact he thinks beer and wings is the perfect solution when the job gets ahold and won't let go.

And hey, who knows. Tonight, maybe it is.
