WORST night ever...

I'm sure many of you knew by now (I was very very excited about all this) that for David's V-day Present I bought tickets to the Foo Fighters (with Against Me! as one of the opening bands) at the Forum. We were totally stoked. I really wanted a gift that would express just how thankful I was for all the love and support David has offered me ( Read more... )

Well, I'm glad it all worked out. I'm curious though... what is the IA?

The IATSE union. The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

Not quite all worked out, but the sting is a little lighter.

I don't understand; you were there as patrons, you paid good money. Why didn't you go to the concert anyway?

Because that would be supporting the Forum which in turn in not in support of the Local IA. We weren't sure where the line was to be crossed and we didnt want to do anything wrong even out of ignorance. In the end our friends who are part of the Union gave us huge Kudos for doing the right thing, but its a blurry line you know? It's something we're actually going to look further into in case it ever accidently happens again. But if we had known from the start I NEVER would have even bought the tickets.

If you're a member of the IA, shouldn't you have known about the strike already?

At that point, the Forum had the money you spent anyway.

Not necessarily. It's an older strike, and its not like they hand you a list when you join. And even if they already had our money (which we are seeking a refund just in case) it was the principle of the thing. You don't cross a picket line, as a patron or a worker.

In my mind, the Union's only as strong as the people supporting it. What right would we have to ask for support if we didn't support their cause too. And imagine it, my local's biggest work space is DISNEYLAND. Asking to abstain from patronizing Disneyland for any amount of time could be completely futile.

I don't quite understand...I mean being part of a Union means you support freedom of speech. You don't HAVE to partake in any particular picket line...it's your choice. I'm pretty sure if another member had shelled out that much money for a concert then saw a picket line they'd just walk right past.

It's your freedom of choice. :\

Even so, one of the first things any union wants to know is "Will you cross a picket line?" If you were to answer yes to that, you most likely wouldn't be sworn in.

You swear an oath to support your union. That oath doesn't mean anything if you don't stand by it, ya know? It truly is a matter of principle. We actually found out about one guy who DID go, KNOWING the union was picketing at the forum...but he's a slime ball.
