Minimum wage?

Jan 09, 2007 21:54

Apparently it's changing (quite possibly) from $7.15 to $7.60 in April.

Or, so I was told.

NS is so behind in the minimum wage...i remember when it was like 5.50, that's so ridiculous. Ontario is at $7.75 right now but it's going up to $8.00 in february. I wish it was higher there for you guys :(, well I wish it was like 10 bucks an hour everywhere haha :D

Eh, minimum wage is minimum for a reason. If you really want more money, find a better job. Besides, the Maritimes' minimum wage is low, but it's on par with our living expenses. It's a lot higher in Alberta, but they actually have the lowest average income:expense ratio in Canada.
(I'd cite that if I could remember where I read it.)

You're right minimum wage is minimum for a reason, it's minimum so that a privileged minority can live a luxurious existence on the broken backs of the majority.

There are infinitely more people than 'better jobs'. It's also not so easy to find a 'better job' without some kind of formal training or education, and if you were raised in a situation where your parents didn't have any 'better jobs' and you don't either then it's hard to break through and get training or education. Does that mean they should have to choose between healthy food and rent?

Even if it were possible, society needs those lower scale jobs to keep its stores, factories, and restaurants running and its streets clean and its infrastructure intact.

All of the rich and all of society owe their relative stability to these people. Maybe a janitor shouldn't be paid the same as a doctor, but he shouldn't be forced to work two jobs just to feed his family and make rent.

If you were raised in a situation where your family made little money (and qualified for a large student loan), you would actually have an easier time than those who live within the bounds of 'lower-middle class'. Student loans from the government are the best deals you can get for paying for your own education, short of actually having the money up front. The government expects a lot of contribution out of your parents, but only if they work in an aforementioned 'better job ( ... )

O_o $7.50 that'll be more than I've ever made, is it okay to be just a little excited? lol. In SK the minimun is 7.15 too but no one is actually paid that, my friends get paid 8.00+ at jobs like MacD's and corner stores, they're paid more because the companies out there can afford to pay their employees more. Then again, every store has a help wanted sign, so the stores don't have that many employees either, that's why they can pay the workers that they have, more.

I'd say it's more the former reason than the latter. Plenty of companies could afford to pay their employees more, but why would they if they didn't have to?

Possibly because they want to keep the employees but SK doesn't have any threat of losing their workers, I don't really know why they would pay them more if they didn't have to, maybe because almost every store has a union that has made their bosses hike up their pay, maybe, but my friend working at Timmys is doing extremely well, getting paid 9.50 an hour and she's worked there for 6 months, her starting pay was 8.00. :S
