I bought a CD of Emma Kirkby singing Handel, Arne and Lampe arias.

I am fairly certain that milliedillmount has this specific CD... she's certainly mentioned singing Where the Bee sucks there lurk I and listening to Kirkby's version, which is the last track on this CD ( Read more... )

"there LURK I?" Why do people insist on Bowdlerizing texts for songs, heh. The original text is "Where the bee sucks, there suck I," with all the double entendre Will Shakespeare intended. :)

I sang the Arne setting of it on a recital awhile back. It's a cute song. He wrote a handful of such little gems.

I wrote it the way the back of the CD did, and trusted it. I admire your correction.

And agree with you that it's a little gem.

Oh, I wasn't griping at you. Just that in the 1800's, a lot of Shakespearian songs were purged of anything that might be remotely considered "naughty," even if it was innocent.

Part of the charm of Shakespeare's texts is his play with words - double meanings, puns, etc.

I thought you were criticising someone other than me, but leapt onto the defensive because that's my instinct.

Purging of anything remotely considered 'naughty'? Wow. I'd have thought that would have happened in the Cromwell era rather than the 1800s.

Heh, I was about to write a comment about the suck/lurk thing but I see I wasn't quick enough! Damn that Thomas Bowdler and his "Family Shakespeare", you can't go changing the words of a play as beautiful as The Tempest.

I'm envious!!! ;) What a good find. I love that kind of stuff--I have a track of her singing "Tornami a vagheggiar," but that's all I have of her.
