It had taken all of Vimes' nerve not to leave the Compound as soon as Eostre had come to him with the news that Mack had disappeared. These things, some part of his mind constantly told him, were better settled simply, on one's own. He would go out into the jungle, he would find the bastard who had taken her. And then he would take care of him ( Read more... )

It had taken nearly everything to get Abby calmed down enough that she didn't come running out here on her own. She was panicky and jumping around even more than normal. So he'd talked to her, found out what was wrong, and promised to go out on the search for find Eostre's baby. He would have gone, even if it hadn't been a promise to Abby. It was what he did, after all, even if he hadn't done it much since coming to the island. He half-expected to see Gibbs as they walked.

There were times when any sort of misgivings, arguments, whatever were forgotten. This was one of them. Tony had bundled up and followed Tim away from the compound, ready for whatever they found.

"You missed this last time," Tim said softly. "When half the island got vanished over to the dinosaur part of the island." He paused a beat and continued. "Including Abs."

That had been terrifying. He always thought of Abby as being safe, even on this island, because she was in the lab. It was when it was proved that she wasn't safe that he really worried.

"Doesn't pull it's punches, does it?" Each word was punctuated with a puff of white, warm breath in the cold air. "I'd kind of hoped..." He'd hoped they wouldn't have to deal with this shit anymore.

Angua walked with the group, her expression trying very hard to stay blank. Enough to hide all the anger she felt, the frustration of being able to do nothing but walk and look around like every other person here. She should be leading the group. She should be up there with Diefenbaker and Grey Wind.

She should be able to contribute more than this.

Angua silently made a pact with herself. If the wolves didn't find the baby, if none of the others did, she would. She would find Mack out of sheer determination if need be. If she couldn't help without the nose and the teeth she didn't have a place on the Watch, and she would not accept that.

Maladicta had been just as buried in her thoughts as Angua, and they were running a similar track, at that. Her eyes didn't follow the same check-the-foliage pattern as everyone else's, quite. She was looking deeper and for more specific things.

She assumed she was looking around the same way Angua was hearing. Or trying to hear. She fell into step beside her partner, frowning and looking the opposite way.

"It's a bitch, isn't it?" she said, absently tonguing a fang, then hesitated.

"No offense."

Oh, just what she needed, the vampire making werewolf jokes.

"I think I hear Vimes calling your name."

"I actually didn't mean offense, it just slipped out," Maladicta said. "I can't stand it either." She looked back ahead.

"I can't hear any of F's thoughts, I can't... sense where she is, I can't hear the baby's heartbeat. I can't fly to cover more ground and I can't see through the dark." She scowled.

"It sucks."

Ray had Constable with him thinking the wolf-dog might be able to help. 'Cause three noses were better than two. Only, the youngest dog didn't seem to get it. Constable maybe had more of his mom's genes than his dad's (although with Dief's motives in most things, the apple might not have fallen so far from the tree after all). No, Constable spent most of the search next to Ray, or wandering off to find Horatio*, or sniffing Grey Wind's ass.

Ray, at least, was looking. He didn't know Mack, but he knew Eostre in a general sort of way, and a baby was a baby and he was gonna do everything he could to find her.

* The first time he'd done it, Ray had gotten all hopeful like he'd found a clue or something...but no, he just wanted to smell Horatio's pockets for food or get a pet or something. Damn mutt.*

* ...Ray might not be a Discpup, but that doesn't mean he isn't Influenced.
