So, I got a rather annoying email from a dear friend who, unfortunately, has the somewhat annoying habit of sending, well, rather annoying emails. It is frightening, this moral compass that seeks to strip us of great
literature. Sounds all too familiar. I have just bought the three book
set, The Dark Material. I had tried to read the first one but did not understand the Daemons, what they were to the humans. So I quit reading it.
But then I read about the second and third books and decided I wanted them.
So, I am starting over.

It takes a bit to get used to the concept of the daemons in the book. Um... my best explanation... imagine if a part of your spirit existed outside of your body as a tangible animal-like creature that wasn't actually an animal, but, for all intents and purposes, looks like one. That's kind of what a daemon is.
