A kiss to build a dream on

Bethesda Softworks announced in a chest thumping podcast a few days ago that Fallout 3 now has 12 different endings with over 200 possible permutations, this as the game enters the final beta stages.  They seemed quite proud of themselves,  even more endings than Oblivion they said....

Fallout 1 has 19 different endings, with 360 possible ( Read more... )

I still think it's going to be good. Oblivion was just a test run for what Fallout 3 is going to be, sort of like how Battlefield 2 ended up just being an extended beta test for what Battlefield 2142 turned out to be. They learned the lessons from Oblivion, and Fallout will be better.

Hopefully.

I still think it's got a lot of potential to be good, yes. I was just amused at how they were so enthralled with how much content they had in the game when Fallout 3 is going to have MUCH less than either of its predecessors. I don't really blame Bethesda for that honestly, that's just where RPG's have been going in the last few years. I don't really think you find the gamers nowadays with the patience to play the 200+ hours of content that Fallout 2 threw at you. Fallout 3 is absolutely gargantuan compared with modern RPG's with its supposed 20-50 hours of main+side quest play through time. That's just sad.

Supposedly, "The Witcher" had like 70+ actual hours of gameplay, but I heard it got mixed reviews. You're right though, most games now are being slimmed down to 10 hours at most because of development costs. It's really sad, because I remember playing Fallout 2 for 2 weeks before I even got out of The Den, and even then, I didn't finish all the quests there because I didn't have the firepower to take out the slavers.

For any game nowadays to have any more than 3 endings is a real feat though, since most of the time you end up with the good ending, bad ending, and hidden ending.

If you haven't played it, you may want to pick up S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. It was fantastic. It's set in Chernobyl and the surrounding area, and it's one hell of a game. If Fallout 3 ends up being anywhere near the quality that Stalker was, then it will be a classic. Stalker has like 8 endings, and they're all good.

I just thought I would let you know that me and Laura have been watching Rome on DVD and it is excellent. I know you are a fan, and no one else I talk to seems to know what I'm talking about.

Great show.
