So this Intelligent Design crap is in the news again. I even saw a columnist editorializing about it in the paper today. The fact that anyone is latching on to this as something that can be taught in science classes is infuriating to me and illustrates the basic misunderstanding so many Americans have about the scientific position on creationism.

My heresy for the day: you're right, Intelligent design is not science; it is a belief (sub)system, which can and usually is incorporated into another, large belief system. It does nothing to prove or disprove evolution, just explains for some people why they accept the theory.
We've been translating Genesis 1 in Hebrew this month, and something interesting fell out as we shook it. There are spots where, rather than creating something, God says "let the earth cause to come forth". So, when someone tries to tell you that the world happened because "God spoke, and it happened", ask them to check the original Hebrew for the times when God tells the Earth to take care of stuff instead.
