I've been looking at jobs and apartments in the village voice website. I guess I could live in New York, but why would I want to do it unless I had some very compelling reason? Like, a school or a job or an apartment already lined up.

If you come, you can move into my little room, at which time I'll also give my 30 days, giving us then something like 29 days in which to find a new place with two rooms. Or three. Once you take the plunge it'll only take Ginger about 25 minutes to decide she's ready to trade in the Portland bus system for the NYCsubways.
