when real life gives you lemons, you find a new life

As of today I can finally break my longish silence.

Long version:
It was a long time coming, actually. The job itself I liked, and most of the people were lovely, but recently the firm's been in decline. Whether it was because of the new higher ups, or because of the new system they implemented, I don't know, but basically it was getting more and more frustrating to work there.

As you know, I was likely to make business trips every now and then. It's part of the job description. But lately they've been giving me more and more trips, closer and closer together in date, for no apparent reason. I suspect, though, it had to do with the poor management. The new people (and my new boss, basically) are all lovely, but difficult to work with. Simple logistics or points of organisation seemed to be so lost. So there was strike number one.

Strike two was the scandal. It actually had to do with people much higher up in the hierarchy than where I was, so I didn't really feel the immediate effects. However, in the long term, it really began to feel like I was working for an unethical company. I always used to joke with my coworkers about the green revolution and how it's such a big deal for all firms from all industries to 'go green' to keep up appearances (so we invested in an office plant as a group pet; we called it Fernando. Guess what kind of plant it was)... but the truth is, there's really no excuse to be irresponsible about the environment anymore. The scandal may have been all on the operations side, so on paper my wing was not really affected, but at the end of the day we're all under one name.

The last strike has to do with my new boss. As I said, he's a lovely guy. But half the time I wondered if he knew what he was doing. His predecessor wasn't the most charming man on this earth, but he had a system and he got things done. With this new boss, there was a lot of confusion in the workplace when it came to important things like deadlines and report formatting. I like to think I'm really calm, and that I don't fit the traditional corporate model of cutthroat office life, but I did put my foot down when a coworker told him that she "forgot" to do the report and he said, cool as you please, that it was "fine" and to just "hand it in soon".

So as of last week I tendered my resignation. It sounded like a simple enough exercise, but boy was I wrong. It didn't help that I wasn't the only one resigning.

At any rate, I want to think it was purely for the ethical stuff, but I have to admit I'm not all that saintly. As it turns out, the timing is good--my husband got assigned to a six-month-to-one-year stint in Boston, and so we're going to try living there for a while. If I'm honest, I'll say that if he was not getting this assignment I might have stayed on a while longer at work.

I'm really sorry for the disappearance--I know I have quite a few fandom responsibilities to keep at, especially with Ao no Michi, teamsweetpower, and heat_up_je. I did check my mail every now and then, to see if there was anything pressing, but I really could not do much else in the storm. I'll do my best to catch up over the next few days. Apart from having the time now, I'm fairly ready to catch up on my dramas as well. :)

Short version: I no longer have a job and at the end of August we're moving to the East Coast for a stint. We'll see how it goes. In fandom news, yes, I am back.

Again, I'm really sorry for the disappearance--especially to Ao no Michi, teamsweetpower, and heat_up_je. I did check my mail every now and then, to see if there was anything pressing, but I did little else in the storm, and maybe I should have. I'll be trying to catch up over the next few days.
