[And just like that, the plan is in place. Simple enough. Take down the guards if possible, if not then keep them occupied and cause enough casualties that their attention won't be on Kadaj ( ... )

"Nph!" Pain spiked out through her back and shoulders, stumbling Samus forward and into a barricade for balance. Spots swam as her taxed lungs took a hit from the -other- side, making her slower to turn to face him, her mind raging at her bodies unwillingness to respond.

"Liquid?!" She blinks in shock, "You're...Otacon's friend?"

Shock flashed over his face and he took a step back in surprise. "You know Otacon?" he asked sharply. It could be a trick. Surely it could. But Otacon had friends he didn't know, he was sure. The man had been there before he had after all and Liquid didn't exactly stalk him. He lowered his aggressive stance, watching her with wary eyes. "...tch. That's right. He was a good friend of mine."

"Yeah...he told me a bit about you." Wiping her hand on the back of her mouth, Samus nodded and pushed herself upright from the barricade, taking a wary look at him again.

"He was helping me design a proto-type combat suit, we talked a lot until he disappeared..." She frowned. The memory was still sour.

"You... you're Samus, then? He mentioned the suit he was making for you." Liquid frowned, not making a move on her. Was attacking her a betrayal of his friendship? He wasn't sure. He'd already gone against Otacon's wishes many times in the absence of the man. Regardless, the bloodlust was fading. He grasped his injured hand in his free one absently. "Was he happy?" he asked, suddenly. "After I disappeared. Before he did. Was he alright?"

"He wasn't happy you were gone." That had been a rough patch for him, she could remember it pretty clearly...at least she thought she did. Something about this place made events blur together. "But he was doing alright. He had friends on the Network, plus Snake."

Now she was coming down and her body was pinging absently with aches and pains that she's gotten from too much hand-to-hand with someone who was too much better then she was.

He nodded slowly. As expected. Dammit, Otacon. For a moment, he was silent save for the tremoring breaths that escaped his body. Then, at last, he spoke. "Otacon would be unhappy if I tried to kill you. So I suppose I'll let you go," he mused, arrogant as always. Truth be told, he had a feeling she could have taken him down if the fight had continued much longer.

"Yeah, that goes double for you." She nodded, breathing heavily. "And yeah, I'm Samus. Forgot to introduce myself amidst the gunfire."

"It's been a long time since I've had a fight like that," he mused thoughtfully. "So thank you, Samus." Perhaps it was odd to be thanking someone for trying to take him down, but despite the state of his body, his mind felt better than it had in a long time.

"Yeah." Truth was, it had been a long time since she'd had a real fight like this. Sparring with Snake and running from the Corporations didn't really count, since this had the potential to be life or death.

"Maybe we can do it again sometime."

He chuckled lowly, amused. "I'd like that. You're quite the good opponent," he responded. Ironically, he had found the life or death side of it quite delightful as well. The thrill of the risk of death was more than enough to make it worthwhile. Although he has to wonder how on earth Otacon fell in with this woman. Now that the adrenaline was fading, the pain was kicking in full force and it was harder to hide it. Much harder. "Although you realise I was just a distraction, correct?"

"The thought had crossed my mind." She nodded slowly as the pieces came together in her mind. "But you're not the kind of opponent I could just turn my back on and walk away from."

"Good to know I'm that attention-grabbing," he teased, although he supposed he knew what she meant. If she hadn't mentioned Otacon, he would have shot her down without hesitation when she left.
