[ There are some things that become habit after a while, as easy as lifting one's arm, as breathing. As natural as turning one's head up to see the starlit skies on a clear night- and that's a strange yet perfect analogy here, for there are never clear nights, and people rarely look up. They scurry from place to place, hiding from the Darkness, hiding from the monsters, knowing that if they pause and look, they will be devoured.
Bruce stands vigil, still at a railing, his legs balancing on the thin metal bar as he looks down on the streets below. He barely moves- a crouching shadow that might as well be a part of the Darkness itself. At the corners of his eyes, barely reaching his consciousness, he can hear the whispers of the city itself.
Imagination. Romanticization. Bruce ignores them and concentrates. Catches a breath. Waits. Keeps his ear out for sounds of panting, of screams, of people who are caught out in the Darkness.
Below, the monsters scrabble at the walls, screaming and roaring as they futilely try to reach their prey. ]
