Just as planned, Clark was at the corner of North and East in Sector Four jangling keys at eleven o-clock, looking up at the sky. He was dressed as the new Clark Kent, the one Lois would recognise but not know. The oversized suit, the thick glasses, the way he rolled his shoulders forward and didn't stand straight. It was all part of the act, and as long as they were in public he'd keep it up, even if she knew better.
It had been fourty terrifying minutes, but it had taken her less than five to get the truth from him. Funny how he could keep a secret for so long and then something as stupid as an alternate dimension would render that completely pointless. And then to add insult to injury she'd known already. She'd known.
They'd managed to avoid actually discussing most of the details, and things had been about settling in and being normal and showing her around the city. Things had been about Clark excusing himself to go on his nightly patrols, then excusing himself to go to work, but otherwise spending as much time as possible around her, as much for her protection as his own peace of mind.
He span the keys around his fingers, raising his other hand awkwardly to adjust his glasses, and then turned abruptly toward the sound of her heartbeat as she approached. Funny, that had been the one constant noise in his life since she'd arrived here, and it was strange how it made him feel less alone, just to know she was there.
And now this. Married, Bruce had said, like it was acceptable to just go dropping that in conversations. It wasn't as if he couldn't pay his own rent, but then Bruce was eccentric, and Clark was past arguing. After all it was true--if he was helping with a more permanent home for Batkids, and it stung Bruce's pride less to reciprocate somehow, then Clark didn't intend to try and stop him. It was an excuse to get Lois out of the starter apartments anyway, even if he couldn't be sure how she'd respond to a proposition that they live together in a home sponsored by Gotham's pet playboy billionaire.
There would probably be words.
