[It's the first time they've met in person since the weeks Franziska can't remember, and she's looking rather more put-together than since when they were together last. She's begun dressing up more formally again, and for the better or the worse, she even has her whip in hand (the wrong one, Miles may notice, but nonetheless) as she strides towards the man she's now proud to call her little brother. Yet, as uplifting the moment is, she's well aware that it's a very tenacious sort of happiness -- however, she pushes the unpleasant feelings down as best as she is able. A child she is no longer.]

Why are you skulking against the walls, Miles Edgeworth? You should be at the very center of this celebration!

[He looks up, startled - and then he smiles at her approach. He turns his head to the side quickly to hide that, of course, because the last thing he wants is to embarrass her, but it takes a moment before he can banish that smile from his face and look at her once more.]

You look well, Franziska.

Hmph. Do I ever not? [And then realizing very quickly what she must have looked the last time he would've seen her face, she moves on.] Anyway. Thank you.

I do suppose you've already had a long line of people waiting to congratulate you, but I'd ... like to contribute to it, for a moment. I won't keep you for too long.

Don't ever worry about taking up my time.

[He steps forward, though, to place his hand gently on her arm. Nothing closer than that; he remembers how much she'd been discomfited by his awkward attempt at an embrace before. Just this.]

And thank you.

[And that level of personal contact she can handle, and she doesn't pull away.]

You needn't thank me -- in fact, I almost feel like reprimanding myself for stating the obvious. What I really wanted to tell you is this. [The resentment flares again, and again, she pushes it down because it's not necessary here, and she doesn't need it nor want to deal with it right now.]

I'm proud of your achievements, Miles Edgeworth. In fact -- [she pauses, face flushing, the next words coming out in a rush she embarrassingly can't control] I'm proud of you.

[And she clears her throat in an attempt to return to her usual demeanor.]

You've done well. You know. For you.

[He understands precisely what she's saying, and how difficult it is for her to say it, and the depth of emotion in those words. His face turns openly sentimental a moment, and he squeezes that shoulder and then lets go, struggling against the urge to kiss her on the forehead in thanks. Instead, he simply says softly:]

It's good to hear that you know, then, precisely what I feel every day.

[She frowns.]

I haven't done anything like this. [And she pauses for breath and an attempt to redirect her feelings.] You're a very strange man, you know.

[He knows she's trying to redirect, but he cooperates.]

Am I?

[And she's grateful for it.]

Indeed. Surely someone's pointed this out to you before now... I still remember when you first came to live with us, you know.

...I think you were a bit young to remember that, Franziska.

Extraneous details, Miles Edgeworth; they're getting in the way of my reflection. Shall I continue, or should I let you return to the festivities?

...Please. Continue.

Anyway, at my first recollection of you, you were an odd little boy -- and yet you were capable of so much more that you seemed on outward appearance. ... I wonder if that was what made us different.

[His brow furrows.]

Forgive me; I do not follow. What is the difference of which you speak?

[She hadn't expected him to understand anyway, and she's gone far too down the current track of this misdirection to take another sharp turn at this point in time. So she lifts her chin and keeps her voice steady.]

That you were capable of surpassing people's expectations.

[And again, his face turns sentimental a moment before he aims it away from her.]

...It helped that expectations were low. You had...quite a weight upon you throughout your life.
