"You're right, it's not." The voice came from behind, attached to a tall British woman. She'd seen him appear - land, however you wished to call it and had been quick to move from the side of the diamond, crossing the pitch until she'd reached him and had managed to catch the last of his complaint.

"Needless to say it is quite real, as unfortunate as that may be." Helen gave him an apologetic smile. This could be a long day for them.

Well wasn't that peachy? A tall British woman wherever the heck he was, but at least she was nice. So he flashed her a quick smile as he started to roll his neck and arms to try and work out the soreness in them. Better that then being cranky all day right? "Yeah I figured it's real, my body is killing me. So where is here exactly? And who are you?"

Because this was not a little town in America, and Jack had a feeling he wouldn't like the answer.

If there was one thing she had to like about being a Greeter it was the people - seeing their reactions, helping them understand and accept everything that was here, and given that her own reaction (both of them) hadn't been the best she wanted to help others to not do that. And keeping this man away from his gun would be a good start to that.

"Helen Magnus, and if the pain persists I can take a look at that for you." Some pain, along with nausea and disorientation was normal, particularly given that the arrivals here weren't the smoothest. Anything after that became her problem.

"As for where we are? Canada, specifically Siren's Port." And here was where she waited for the typical 'I've never heard of it' or 'it's not on the map' answer.

After rolling his head some he reached up and unzipped his coat, the sheriff's badge just visible on it. He wouldn't shoot indiscriminately, nope, if anything he had learned shooting was the last resort. So he when he cleared his head some, he moved his hand off his pistol, folding his arms over his chest.

"Jack Carter, and are you, some sort of, doctor or something?" And he just hoped he wouldn't have to see her after this. But with his habit of injuries in the line of duty well, it may only be a matter of time.

But that? It wasn't that he hadn't heard of it (because he hadn't), and it wasn't that it wasn't on a map (Eureka wasn't), it was in Canada that bugged him. "You're kidding right? Canada? How, why, just, wait, Canada? I'm in freaking Canada?" And instead of going for his gun his hands just went in front of him vaguely gesturing at her.

"Exactly that. And it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Sheriff." Because titles should be used if known.

"And I'm not." Did people seriously joke about such things? The hand gesture however was a little more reassuring, although separating those questions?

"I'd ask that you keep an open mind for this. The idea behind what I'm about to tell you may sound inconceivable but you have my assurances that it is real." Even if she'd as yet been unable to see it but she'd been brought here twice - for now that was enough.

"The reason for your being here is unknown but the manner of your arrival is. There's a device known as the Core. Through ways we've as yet been unable to determine it has the power to bring individuals here." Individuals from various realities and worlds, even time, but she was starting small.

He nodded at that, only slightly reassured by the fact that she was a doctor. But then he had to ask, living in Eureka had made him suspicious of doctors. "What, kind of doctor?"

And well, he had heard worse and he could dream right? This could all be a GD prank or something and he could just go home when it was over. But when she said keep an open mind, he nodded, he was good at that at least. But he explanation, yeah that got her slightly confused look.

"So it's some sort of, fancy teleporter that makes you sick when you go through it?" And he couldn't stop the science fiction comparison, but it's the best he had. At least it made sense.

"A medical doctor." Except that was only part of the answer, but she tended not to let people in on that until later, given the nature of being here it could make some people less trusting given her specialities, which was the opposite of her aims.

"In essence, yes." Except that wasn't the only side effect. "I'm afraid that there's more." This bit she actually didn't like. For those that already had abilities prior to their arrival it was a different story but for those that didn't? That had to hear that they had been altered, perhaps experimented on and were left with something more? It wasn't easy, even if people didn't seem to mind.

"Any specialty to that?" Because one could be a medical doctor with additional titles right? Just like a scientist. He liked knowing those things, made it easier to find those people if he needed them later.

When he got that right though? Yeah that smile is back, but it quickly faded when she said there was more. What was worst than being stuck in Canada? "Don't tell me, the folks that own the device, the Core, they're part of some top secret government thing and this is all an experiment to see what folks will do when stuck in Canada?" Because that sounded so much like what GD would do that it wasn't even funny.

"A story for another time." If not exactly a story, but she didn't want to become distracted from the matter at hand. His next guess? Not exactly true, and as far from true as she could possibly think of. And what did everyone seem to have against Canada? She'd enjoyed living there.

"Far from it, actually." For one no one really owned the Core, especially given the amount of policies in place to keep people from it. "There are people here with abilities - some already had them prior to their arrival in Siren's Port but others received them after being brought here, and everyone that is brought here has an ability." There really wasn't an easy way to put it.

He's American, it's the average American thought that Canada does not exist or isn't real. Not that he doubted it wasn't nice, just that, it wasn't his thing. But he flashed her a smile, "I will hold you to that story alright?"

And now that explanation? That got her a very surprised look. Just what? He had seen robotic dog competitions, artificial mucus, and a tunneler and a host of other things. But a device that messed with your body upon arriving?

That just wasn't cool.

"What? That thing, the thingy that brought me here, us here, everyone here," and yes he had momentarily dropped the proper name for the Core, "messed with my body before I got here?" And now he was patting his body down, almost in an attempt to see if he felt any differently. Because that was easier to do then panic.

Helen gave him a nod. "All right." Although given what came next it was possibly far more relevant now.

"There are multiple theories surrounding that but that is one of them, yes." Her own theory was far less pleasant to hear, and one she didn't wish to share around.

"The majority of the abilities here aren't of a physically altering nature." Hopefully that would calm him slightly, or focus him. "And the triggers surrounding them different depending on both ability and individual." Ergo he may discover his ability that night or not for several weeks, even months.

Jack wouldn't push it for now, maybe over a banana milkshake and tea or something, where they could relax, but not right then. So he flashed her another smile. Better to not be so pushy, at least not yet.

And he still kept patting at his body, not at all convinced things were still the same yet. Give him a moment Helen to make sure, he had been told similar in the past and turned invisible. And the time he tried to get through a building full of gravity wells. He had to make sure. And when she said there was no specific trigger? Welp that made him stare at her hard.

"So you mean, that I could one day wake up and shoot lasers out of my eyes, or someone could give me a piece of too burnt toast which makes me mad and I could set them on fire or something?" Extreme examples yes, but it was easier to imagine those then say, longevity or some such thing.

"Not quite." It was possible but that was in the more extreme of cases, and she didn't want to worry him further. "Ecery ability has a trigger, although what motivates one individual is different from another. And it's unlikely that you'd be able to set someone on fire." At least from the off - pyrokinesis started small but was particularly difficult to control.

"Things tend to start small, with little oddities or things out of the ordinary happening. Telekinetics usually find that things move with a stray thought - they wish to find something or get something off of their desk and it simply moves to them. The trigger comes more with control." Was that sounding any better now?

She had already worried him with the idea of powers. If he had come from any where else in the world he would have thought it cool, but Eureka had taught him such things came with a price. So while her explanation may have, settled some issues, he still had others. "So what's the catch? That we're stuck here?"

Because that was not a fair trade off at all. A power, an unknown power, for being stuck in some small rinkie dink town in Canada. Oh what was his life?

"Unfortunately so. There's no way to return home ourselves but occasionally there are those that do return." As she once had, but the methods weren't ones to great someone with.

"There's one more thing which I need to warn you of. The nights here are unlike nights from any other place. There are creatures here which are dangerous, making being out after dark unsafe. There's a siren to warn you of when darkness is falling, something which you should take note of."

"Yeah? What makes that happen? The, ending people home thing?" And while they may not be the best to greet someone with Jack wanted to know.

But at the idea of creatures? Jack stare at her, eyes wide. "Creatures? What kind of creatures? And why the siren? I get dangerous but come on, folks have powers, can't they defend themselves?"
