"Kuchiki-sensei, please."

The arrogant man barely looked at the young woman following him. "Leave."

"But -"

He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, his grey eyes colder than the ice that his fellow taichou could summon. He turned with a flare of a scarf and the girl was left on the sidewalk and burst into tears, turning to run away.

Byakuya hoped she didn't run into Hitsugaya. He stopped at a coffee shop and bought himself a warm cup of tea to take with him as he wandered.

That was a pretty cruel sendoff. Cass watched as the girl ran off in tears, waiting outside of the coffee shop for her own coffee. She didn't even know what to think. The man carried himself highly and the woman addressed him with respect. Still, he didn't care.

She didn't know the story. She wasn't sure she wanted to.

"Who was she?" she asked quietly, looking over.

Byakuya was surprised that anyone spoke to him. Most people didn't. They understood the air of nobility that said they shouldn't. He glanced at the woman who spoke, holding his tea easily.

"No one of importance." Now he was curious. Most didn't talk to him. He can linger for a moment.

She wasn't afraid of being looked down on. If nothing else, it would suit her disguise. Still, she looked at him squarely, curious as well. "Not important to you, maybe." But she was important to someone. "She thought otherwise."

Cass turned back to where the girl was for a moment and then back to the counter to get her tea. Assam. "Why did you turn her away?"

Byakuya ticked up the eyebrow. He was more interested in the way she moved, than the way she spoke. Though both were important. They said a lot about a person.

"She is my former assistant." He didn't feel the need to explain more than that.

So she was fired. Cassandra nodded slowly, taking a sip of her tea. It warmed her hands from the cold; she'd been out most of the day. She took a moment to look him over, to assess his rank. Teacher, Japanese. Strong. He was used to having authority.

"Why did you let her go?"

That was a bold question to Byakuya and he ticked up an eyebrow. He assessed the girl quietly. For a moment, he almost released his reiatsu to test the air, but decided against it.

"She is a friend."

Almost it's a question.

She frowned. If she had been a friend of his, then he wouldn't have treated her like that. It bothered her. It wasn't a lie, per say, but still...

"Really?" There was skepticism in her voice.

He just watched her. He'd stated the girl's relationship with him. This girl was the one defending her. Either she knew his former assistant or she was some random person who seemed to think that he cared what others thought of how he treated his lessers.

When she asked her question, he ticked up that eyebrow a bit further. He wondered why she'd asked that. Surely she - He saw now. She thought he was claiming the girl as his friend. What? Hadn't she been listening when he'd said she was his assistant?

Byakuya wasn't the most loquacious of men. He waited for the girl to realize her mistake.
