Would they not lose their importance? [ She'd stopped counting events years ago. She mentally remembered them at times, though she never did anything for them. Her reasoning this time is more general - you have not gained that time when you return home, would their significance here not be moot? ]

It depends on how you look at it, I guess. Maybe it's not as important to grown-ups, but when you're still a kid, it kinda affects what you're allowed to do.
