[ The feed turns on, to a tired looking Ella. She hasn't been paying attention to the NV lately, working on managing a healthy(ish) balance between her two jobs, and ... other things. But despite that, there is a teasing spark in her eyes ( Read more... )

[Grading papers again.]

There is an entire language devoted not only to the fan but to sleeves amongst my culture.

Sleeves? What kind of sleeves? I can't imagine these are very expressive.

Our traditional sleeves are somewhat fuller than most.

[He holds up his own arm. He's wearing the tradition black kosode of the shinigami. He used his own clothing to drive home a point of samurai culture and literature today.]

There is an entire language devoted to the way a sleeve or a fan is moved, or how it is held.

Ahh, I see what you mean. I knew about the language of fans of course, but the sleeves on the clothing we have back home aren't usually quite that full. With a sleeve like yours though, you hardly need a fan.

Fans are very traditional amongst my culture. As status symbols, as works of art, and as weapons. However, they are also used as communication devices and as props for dances and plays.

Sleeves can also be used as a communication device if one knows how to read them.

[ Okay she understands the part about status symbols, weapons, props and such - but communication? She tilts her head curiously. ]

Communication devices? How so?

Indeed. Because they are a highly prized possession, and appropriate gifts, messages can be written upon the fan itself, being passed between people and no one would suspect. As well, movements of the fan, how it's being held, and where it is being held is another form of language.

The fans part I get, but you're talking about communication with sleeves. It's not like you can pass a sleeve off to someone with a message, right?

No, but the same principle holds true. How they are held, how they are moved, how long they are everything about a sleeve, to those that know the language, can be a word, a phrase, an idea. It is something I learned at a young age.

That sounds pretty fascinating actually. Would you say that's still practiced now, even in your time?

[ Your time being present time, natch. ]

I have not seen it practiced here, but in Soul Society it is still considered a fine art. It is a mark of nobility and focus to be able to read and use either or both.

[Guess who can use both and reads it like a book?]

[ No time like the present, right? Besides, the more ways Ella can find to speak to get around any 'shut up' commands, the better. ]

Do you know it?

[ She'd assume as much, but better to ask first. ]

Do you think you could teach me?

[ ... she really should reconsider that. She's just going to give Hattie more reasons to be suspicious. ]

[A tick up of the eyebrow.]

I am well versed in both fan and sleeve language. It was a requirement.

[ She's silent for a moment, because that wasn't really a yes or no as far as teaching her. ]

So ... is that a yes, a no, or a you're wasting your breath, Ella?

[ Half teasing in that. He was a teacher already after all - he probably wouldn't want to teach someone else. And actually she shouldn't try to take up extra hobbies. She was going to need as much free time and money as she could get. ]

No, nevermind, forget I asked.

[ Waving it off dismissively. ]

[Byakuya ticks that eyebrow higher.]

I have a few free hours on the weekend, if that would be amenable.

[ Lift that eyebrow any higher and it will be in the air. :3 Ella pauses, mentally noting to get her schedule together a bit better. It was good enough to tell herself to stay awake when she needed to be at work and alert, but she still needed to sleep sometime. She'd have to speak with Tifa about cutting her hours shorter. ]

That'll be fine. In the morning? Sunday?
