[Kadaj is smirking down at the NV when the feed starts, looking thoroughly pleased with himself. The childish tilt of his head contrasts strangely with the cold malice in his eyes.]

I hope you're all listening, because I'm not going to repeat myself. You have something which belongs to me, so we took something of yours. See?

[...Yaha can never just have normal friends, can he?]

If you don't mind my saying so, this doesn't seem like the best of plans.

I suppose it's too late to offer myself up in her place.

!

[Liquid just stares at the NV in silence for a moment.]

Ah- definitely too late. Not to mention Yaha would not approve.

No. No, of course he wouldn't. [Ever so slightly bitter.]

It's a brave offer. But it's not one you should make so freely.

It wasn't made freely. But there's nothing else I can do, either. Even if this is my fault. It's all too late for that. Years too late.

Time cannot be reversed. Blaming yourself will do nothing.

[An utterly humourless laugh.]

That won't stop others from blaming me. [Others like you.]

I am not blaming you for the actions of the far past. I have no idea what you did to him and nor do I care. All I blame you for is being too much of an uncaring coward to try to help him now. And you've already made your excuses on that front countless times.

What I- [What he did. He felt sick, regret and self-loathing and disgust churning in his stomach. Maybe if he'd done things differently, maybe Yaha wouldn't have had to use his eyes on him. Maybe things wouldn't have-

It's a while before he speaks again. He carefully buries things, shuts it all away, rebuilds his façade. Liquid was right. This wasn't about what he'd done to Yaha in the past.]

...I have, haven't I? Always have been good with excuses. It's not... It's not that I don't care, you understand? But I'd rather not get involved with him if I can help it.

...no. I suppose I can understand that.

And you're probably right to, for your own sake. It just... doesn't feel right. He can't get over you even if he was willing to try. Every other thing is about you. He thinks that if he waits, you'll come. He thinks that pretending to be a good citizen will impress you.

But it's partly my fault too. He told me to my face, after all. Before I was sent back home, he was starting to get over you. But once I disappeared... he decided that you were the only one that would come back to him. [He laughs lightly.] He said that if I disappeared again he was going to break my arm so it couldn't be fixed and would remind me forever not to do it again.

He can't hyponotise me, you see. Brother neither. We're too strong-willed.

[He's not even sure what to say to all that. He's bad enough at dealing with his own problems, and hearing about someone else's was distinctly uncomfortable. Especially when Yaha was still at the centre of them, and by extension so was he. There's a slightly awkward silence, and he clears his throat.]

Ah, so you're aware of his... ability. I'm impressed; I doubt there are many strong enough to resist that power. I certainly don't know of any others.

[Liquid wasn't expecting him to deal with it. It was simply the facts.]

He tried to trick me at first. Told me it meant he'd be able to see my soul. But when he tried it, I stopped him. He was quite surprised, I think.

[He laughs, amused.]

I worked with someone with a similar power; with practice, you get used to resisting intrusions into your mind. Psychic insulation helps, but that's not something I have access to. It helps that I'm stubborn.

[A slight pause before he speaks again.] What of yourself? I should have thought these pacts of yours would have raised your resistance.

He's a tricky one, all right. Good at getting his own way.

[Another pause.]

...Yaha made his pact some time before me. I'm not sure what resistance mine would offer me against his hypnosis, and to be quite honest I'd rather not find out.

I do know that he needs to see a man's eyes to hypnotise him. One thing that can be guarded against, at least. [There's a quiet tapping sound, like a fingernail against metal. The helmet.]

[voice] ysobritish April 16 2011, 18:28:33 UTC
Yes. It was how I ended up stopping him; I covered his eyes.

[...huh. That did explain a lot.]

I'll admit I don't know much about these pacts. They don't exist in my world. Nor does magic.

Well, they're not all that common, believe it or not. For many reasons. When you make a pact, you gain a great deal of power, but you also lose something. It tends to be whatever you value the most. That's the price you pay. And then there's the matter of your pact partners...

Let's just say they're not all that they're cracked up to be, and leave it at that. Of course, some people think differently.
