Keeping my tires properly inflated has given me an almost 10% improvement in gas mileage over the last three tanks. I was always very lazy about it before ( Read more... )

I use MARTA almost exclusively for solo transportation. :)

Awesome. I wish transit was an option here. The closest bus stop is at least a mile away.

I telecommute 4 days a week. When Jane goes back to school, she'll only be driving 5 miles each way instead of over 25 miles each way to work now.

Man, I LOVE telecommunting. I actually get a lot more office- and research-type things done at home than I can with the office distractions, unless I'm there on a day (Saturdays in particular, because we have an intern at the gallery then) when no one else is in.

I *will* say that I'm not in love with my 20 minute walk to the bus stop right now. :P It's motivating me to get down to Sopo to refurbish my bicycle, so it will only take two minutes to get to the bus!

Five miles is awesome as well! James currently has a five day a week commute from Decatur to Roswell, which fits neatly into the category of "horrific." I only hope that I sort of make up for all his Commute Hell by MARTA-ing.

Oh, did you know that there's a student rate for a monthly MARTA card? Only $32 for all the rides you can stand! It comes in very handy for those times when you're going to a MARTA-compatible venue in which parking is nightmarish to nonexistent.

I telecommute as much as possible, *try* to buy all the groceries for the week in one trip and use cloth diapers and cloth shopping bags (saves the energy of disposables being made and transported to stores, plus the energy of driving to stores and buying them).

I've been working from home for the past 7.5 years. We typically try to postpone giving in and turning the A/C on as long as possible. I work in the basement where it's cooler, which helps. We of course have a programmable thermostat so that we adjust it appropriately during the night when we're asleep or daytime when I'm often the only one home. When a bulb goes out we typically replace it with a CFL, except for some places where it would mean replacing the entire fixture. We have ceiling fans which help with the postponing of turning on the A/C.

Live in Central Europe!

Ha ha, okay, I know it's not fair, but I love that by simply living here you have an easier time conserving energy: Non-existent A/C use, unbelievable public transport, real grocery stores within walking distance, magical toilets that use less water than US "low-flow", etc.

For me personally: Replacing all bulbs with fluorescents (incandescents are illegal here now anyway) as they burn out, shutting everything with a wall wart off when not in use, resisting buying a fan for one more summer.

Places where I've sinned: Boyfriend takes a hot, 20 minute shower every day (very unusual here) and I need lots of artificial heat and light in the winter to not go completely insane (the Germans seem used to living in cold and darkness without too many ill effects).
