"Cripes Kate, I knew you could scream but that was ridiculous.." Jack said in pained tone, clutching his right ear. Kate grinned sheepishly at him, her cheeks reddening slightly as they walked away from the exit of the giant roller coaster they'd just ridden.

"Well, it was scary!" she protested, giggling as he shook his head. She wrapped her arm through his as they weaved their way through the bustling crowds on the busy midway, admiring the flickering lights on all the different thrill rides as dusk settled around them. They wandered over to a food booth, bought a cone of cotton candy to share and somehow managed to find a bench that was empty. Quickly claiming it, they sat down and worked on the fluffy candy, chattering happily as they listened to the shouts and mingled music around them. Kate grinned as Jack pulled a long fluffy piece of cotton candy off the cone and offered it to her. She bit it in half with a bit of difficulty and took the rest from him, offering it to him instead as her tongue fought to unstick some of the candy from the roof of her mouth. He took it with twinkling eyes, purposely nipping the ends of her fingers, making her squeak. He laughed softly and after he'd swallowed the candy he leaned in, kissing her softly, tasting the sugary sweetness on her lips. She sighed contentedly as he pulled away, smiling happily at him. He'd never seen her so happy, so carefree. He had been right, that all she needed was to get away, to find a place where she was safe. Kate was happier than he'd ever seen her before, and that made him one of the happiest guys around.

"Wait here." he told her, once they were almost done with the cotton candy. She gave him a confused look but nodded, watching him dart off through the crowd. Shrugging, she sat back and watched the slowly thinning crowd as the midway began to close, though the games and entertainment were still going strong.

Jack weaved his way expertly through the crowd, finally ending up at the ferris wheel, where the ride operator was starting to close down for the night. Jack was relieved to see the operator was the one he knew, one that worked in the same medical building as him. The man, Mark, owed Jack ten dollars, but Jack thought he knew a better way that the man could pay him back. Jack hurried forwards after the last person got off the ride and greeted him, then asked him for his favour. Mark nodded, grinning at the prospect of no longer owing Jack any money for such a simple favour, and Jack ran off to get Kate.

He found her just where he'd left her, though she looked bored now, the cardboard cone completely stripped of cotton candy. She immediately perked up as he rounded the bench and appeared in front of her and he smiled, loving how her eyes lit up whenever she saw him, just the way he imagined his own did when he saw her.

"Come with me." he said softly, holding out his hand to her. She took it and let him pull her up, looking at him curiously.

"Where are we going?" she asked as they walked against the flow of the chattering crowd, most of whom were heading for the exits.

"You'll see." he said slyly, and tugged on her hand to get her to hurry up as she slowed, wanting to pet one of the animals on display in the small petting zoo they passed. They reached the ferris wheel a few moments later, and by that time, most of the midway-goers had either left or migrated to the entertainment area.

"Isn't this closed?" she asked, puzzled, as Jack pulled her towards the 'in' gate.

"Not for you two." Mark said, appearing behind them and startling Kate, making her jump. He grinned at her and opened the gate for them, sweeping his arm towards the seat that was in loading position. Kate had a slightly surprised look on her face. Jack grinned and pulled her towards the seat, and she came willingly after a moment, shooting him a puzzled look.

"You did this?" she asked him quietly as Mark locked the safety on their cart and walked over to the controls. Jack smiled and took Kate's hand, weaving his fingers into hers, giving her hand a small, loving squeeze. Kate smiled and leaned against him, her head resting on his shoulder as he let go of her hand and wrapped an arm around her, holding her close as the ride began to move. She shivered lightly from the cool breeze of the night and Jack tightened his grip, keeping her warm with his body heat.

They went all the way around once, slowly, looking around them at all the lights shining around the fair. On their second way around, like Jack had arranged, they glided to a stop at the top, Kate gasping from the slight jolt as they ceased movement. Kate smiled when she realized they'd stopped and looked out over the edge, watching the people walk around below them, looking quite a bit smaller than normal.

"This makes me feel like I'm on top of the world..." she breathed, looking down and around her in awe. Jack smiled, watching her, his heart pounding with love.

"You make me feel like I'm on top of the world." Jack said softly. Kate turned to look at him, seeing the sincerety in his eyes, but amused by his wording all the same.

"That's incredibly cheesy, Jack.." she teased him, grasping his hand and squeezing it. He gave her a bashful smile and poked her in the ribs, laughing at her squeal.

"Cheesy or not, its completely true." he told her seriously, watching as her cheeks began to redden.

"Same goes for me." she replied softly. He smiled, his eyes brimming with love and leaned towards her, wrapping his arms around her and kissing her softly, holding her small form close against him. Her eyes closed automatically and she revelled in his taste, his smell, his warmth. She loved everything about him, and she wanted nothing more than to just stay in his arms forever. Eventually they broke apart and Kate settled herself against him, her back pressing into his side, his arms wrapped around her from behind. She lay her arms over his where they rested on her stomach, snuggling back against him just as the ride began to move again. They enjoyed the long, slow ride that Mark allowed them, just wrapped up in each other's arms, in a completely comfortable silence. After about ten minutes the ride slowed to a stop for good, and Jack swept a giggling Kate off her feet, steadying her as she wrapped her arms around his neck, delighted he was carrying her. Bidding Mark goodbye, he moved towards the exit, ignoring the curious looks they were getting from passers-by and the security guards as they headed towards their car after a wonderful day together.
