My thoughts on 4th Edition D&D

Disclaimer: I am not a beta-tester, just someone who went to DC and played some 4th Ed this weekend. I figure only a small subset of you will care. ( You know who you are. )

Did you get any sense of what the experience is from the DM side?

Encounter design in general is probably the main improvement. They've gone back to the 1st / 2nd edition idea of monsters being worth XP, so no needing to look at CR tables to calc XP. Also, the default opponent is as many monsters as PCs, instead of just one. I think the old system lead to either you'll take me out quickly or i'll devour a PC or two first, which was a bit too swingy. Each monster has a role, such as Skirmisher, Artillery, Lurker, Brute, etc. so you know what a monster is intended for (and good at). Also, the stat blocks are less cluttered, and instead of monsters having half a dozen abilities (most of which are useless at the monster's intended level), they'll have a couple that you'll actually be using.
