Bear in mind, though, that lately the limit on carry-on isn't "what are you allowed" but "how hard can you cram your suitcase in on top of someone's soft-side bag before a flight attendant notices and makes you check it?"
Heh - coming back from Oregon, I got around the fee for extra checked bags because there ended up not being room for my carryon. I was a little nervous, since the carryon was actually a sewing machine case and I didn't know if it'd stay shut during the flight, but I guess being one of the last things loaded meant they had time and didn't handle it too roughly.
