What was highschool like?

I've never went through high school, and I usually percieve that as kind of a blessing, because my reigning perspective on high school is "Assholetopulous", wherein the most bitter teachers who are as minimally competent as possible put as little heart manageable into pushing around a trough of drama queens and brahs, when being a brah has as much ( Read more... )

High school had its redeeming values, in that:
1. It lets you experience shitheads first-hand and learn to deal with them without taking it personally.
2. You meet a lot of people who are more like you than unlike you (aka brahs) which can lead to some really good, long-lasting friendships.
3. It gives you ample opportunity to get laid and experiment with drugs, which I think is something that's better to get out of your way in your teenage years than in your mid-20's.

I think that your description is quite cynical. Sure, there is a negative side. I would say that most of the actual time spent in high school is spent being bored or feeling like you could be doing something better with the time. That said, it can be a lot of fun, provided you're connected to a good network of friends.

I don't remember jerks being too much of a problem, except that I used to be kind of sensitive to teasing back then. I had little communication with "drama queens" and "brahs." Most of the students were the way most students in college are. You just don't notice them. You don't really remember them.

Human beings tend to be negative as a general rule, so most of the stories you hear are going to be negative. That doesn't mean that high school is an entirely negative experience for everyone involved. I kind of liked it. Of course, I like adulthood a lot more.

One thing interesting about high school is the amount of intermingling with people of other social classes. Before then you're too young to really notice symbols of social class and afterward people are distinctly segregated (college>crappy-ass college>knocked up girlfriend). But, for a brief four years, you get to experience classism between actual people, as opposed to being transmitted via governmental policy and uniformed men with tazers.
