It sucks to be on the outside in a situation like this. You feel very helpless.

Does she have a partner?

Oh, yeah. She has a doting husband and a huge community. Possibly over 1000 people are praying for her right now, many who haven't even met her. I think she's taking some comfort from that, and I think that's great. I'm just... alien.

I'm sorry to hear that.

It's an idiot thought, but sometimes I think that, in some situations, all you can do is drive the getaway car. There's things going on behind closed doors that you just can't help with, but it matters that you're ready when the doors open again.

I'll join in prayers for your sister and niece.

In situations like this, if the worst happens, there is no comfort apart from God ( ... )

When it comes to death, Adam, your world is a lot darker than hers.
True, that.

And I believe that God does have a purpose and a plan.
His purpose and plan often look a lot like genetics, happenstance, human error, and human competence. Praising God for success diminishes the training and dedication of the doctors involved. Praising God for success is a slap in the face to devout people the world over in less developed countries who suffer beyond anything us God-beloved American white folk can appreciate. I don't know about you, but that seems like a pretty callous sentiment to me.

Anything you want to say to her about her daughter that isn't included here, by the way, is probably a very bad idea.
That's good advice, I can imagine well-intentioned words landing pretty sorely in a way felt for years. I apologize if this post has been triggering. =/

Love you, Jessi.

Adam, I don't know if you have said anything wrong--that was just friendly advice.

Anonymous--I don't rule out that encouraging us to be more caring, or to value our loved ones, or to help those less fortunate may be God's purpose. I don't claim to know God's purpose. I believe that there is a purpose in death as well as in life, and I wish no one had to suffer poverty or hunger--but I know many "God-beloved American white folk" who have suffered more than you realize.

God is all-powerful, so He can stop tragedy, supernaturally or through natural means. He does not always, and I don't know why. I agree he weeps with us when we undergo painful times. But I also know that in all things He works for the good of those who love Him--not that all things are good, but He can use them all.

Yay for initial success! It doesn't make the early pain and fear go away, but it's good.

Here's hoping that everyone's recovery is quick, and that the baby gets to do fun baby things like laughing soon.
