I agree with the considerations here, but it's important to say that, when needed, this "rules" can be broken. I find myself more and more often breaking deliberately the perspective or feeling better with a background rendered as a complete plain surface.
I'd like to read an analysis on his hatching & color tecnique :)

For his western comics Jean Giraud used extensively the book on B-westerns The Thrill of It All for photo-references.
In which book appeared the photos you showed us and that Moebius used for his nature-girl in the "Rimbaud"-comic (The other main character, the fat boy is reading Rimbaud)?
