The esient things to start out making (in my opinion) are scarves. Just learn a stitch and then make a scarf from it. Learn another and repeat, or mix the two. It is just like making the stich samples that all the books and tutorials would have you do (but longer).
Or, you could save all the learning stich samples you make and then sow them all together to make something look patchworky. Susan and I were trying to do that to make a huge blanket for a friend.
I'm still shit at doing anything to do with circles. I find those hard and frustrating. I'm good with scarves and bags though (and I accidently found out a really cool and easy way to make bags that are both pleasing to the eye and really sturdy).
Susan is amazing with crocheting and knitting. She has made enough scarves, ponchos, hats, and gloves to successfully look homeless for the rest of her days. It is amazing.
So far I can do a pretty crappy chain stitch and I'm still unsure how to make another row, but I figure I should just work on the chain stitch until it's decent.
What I really, really, really want to make is doillies because they're useless but beautiful. Also I secretly think I am an old lady on the inside.
I told Susan we'll have a battle in the future sometime. It will be more televised than the super bowl, I'm sure.

I keep your octopus by my side at all times when I'm working. It's a good luck charm, I swear.
