From what I understand, they did want to hack off Tyrion's nose but it would have been too expensive to continually green-screen it -- that's why they included that line of Cersei's, "I heard you'd lost your nose, but it doesn't look as gruesome as all that." Big battles are expensive to produce as well, which is probably why we didn't get to see the Battle of the Fist.

I do agree with kyootulu about the Barristan reveal; I was annoyed at first but then it was like 'no that makes sense' and how could I not love such a triumphant return of one of my favourites?? I expect more hardcore bookies will be foaming, though
