See, told you I would post, I just needed a suitable adventure. So how do I friend people, I know it should be obvious but I seem to be missing the option...

go to their userinfo page (if they've already friended you you can just click their name on your userinfo page) at the topof their userinfo page there'll be a button that (when you move your mouse over it) says "add this user as a friend"

clicky and voila!
