Amazing. And to think Portland has a reputation for being one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country.

I shudder to think about biking in places like Houston...

It makes me long for a paint-gun. Consistent application of hot pink paint as a reward for bad behavior might eventually have an effect on motorists - or at least feel good at the time :)

About 20 years ago I was riding through a controlled intersection, and there was a car in the oncoming left-turn lane. I saw they were about to make the turn in directly in my path, made unambiguous eye contact with the driver and held out my left hand in stop motion. The driver shook his head and made the turn anyway. I swerved to my left and clipped his fender, careening me across the oncoming traffic lane (there were no cars), and came to halt in a gas station on the corner. After that, I've just never ridden in traffic. I can be both right and dead ( ... )

heh. This happens to me every day on the way to the law library. I thought I was being nice giving them the hand turn signals, but I don't think anyone knows what they mean. Add some terribly paved roads complete with 1' deep pot holes and it makes for a lovely morning ride!

Bicyclists get mowed down regularly in Tucson...it's problematic. My son doesn't even like to ride his bike here, for safety reasons as well as the heat.
