You're right to get XP because a lot of current software is still incompatible with Vista and then you'd end up having to buy patches for them to make them work.

You're much better off upgrading to XP instead of Vista. Aside from the "it's new, so lots of bugs" part of it, you'd most likely have to do a whole lot of upgrading to your hardware, too. Way more trouble than it's worth, especially when XP will work just fine for a long time.
