What a summer!
Just one last day in Iceland, and I shall be back home (well, close to it) tomorrow in the early evening.
I'm leaving Iceland at 5pm, and will arrive in Seattle at 5:45pm. Magic! *g*
Am currently sitting in a little roof-top cafe, enjoying the weather, 'cause wherever I go, the sun comes out.
....
Well, the internet connection at the cafe didn't allow me to upload pics, so I' no longer there, but this is what it looked like:
Iceland has fantastic landscapes, and most of the waterfalls we tourists are exclaiming about along the way to the "real" ones, don't even have names and the Icelandic guides smile tolerantly at us ignorant foreigners.
Five days here are barely enough to scratch the surface, but frankly, I don't think I could afford another day.
Despite camping, and eating mostly bread and cheese bought at one of the "cheap" supermarkets, the money just melts away. If even the Japanese travelers say Iceland is expensive, it must be true. *g*
The one thing that is cheap, and very lovely, are the thermal swimming pools! There is one right next to the camp site, and it's cheaper than a cup of coffee. It's wonderfully relaxing to lounge in a "hot pot" after a day of exploring the country.
During my first tour on Monday, I noticed a small van doing the same tour and asked the driver if he did any other tours, since it's always much nicer to be with a small group, if individual travel is impossible, and he did.
He gave me a fantastic discount if I booked two tours with his company, and on the second one, he hired me as a translator when it turned out the whole group was German, and they couldn't understand his heavily accented English very well. It was fun, and the tour cost me next to nothing.
I blew some of the money I saved on a nice meal at a restaurant (I didn't choose the icelandic traditional: boiled sheep's head, with the eyes, tongue, ears etc. still attached, nor the puffin, whale, or rotten shark meat), and a CD for my husband.
Here are a few pics of the areas I've seen:
This is just a minute amount of pics, but I'll spare you more! :D
Once I'm home, there is a lot of picture organizing to do.
Tomorrow I'll spend a few hours at the Blue Lagoon, which is really close to the airport, so I can stop by there on the way.
