OMG I'm feeling the same way as you. In these curcumstances there are only victems. I feel bad that his life is done at 19 and I almost wish (for his sake) that he were killed. The interesting thing is that the person who got him to come out of the boat was a trained psychologist. I say the power of compassion and empathy will always overpower force.

you are only the second person out of the hundreds of people i read on lj and fb to express sorrow for the bombers. it takes a lot of courage to say it out loud and it restores my faith a tiny bit to see people say it.

it's not easy to find even an ounce of pity for people who have done terrible, terrible things. old age and motherhood are the two things that make the many complexities of each person more apparent to me. when you try to avoid teaching your children that there are "naughty" or "bad" people, you have to admit that people like the bombers arrived where they did through a long series of events. i try to tell the kids that many people don't have solid and supportive childhoods to show them right from wrong and, whether they did or didn't, people frequently fall into the potholes of bad decisions, which can easily lead to more bad decisions and a feeling they can't escape.

man, life can be tough. life can be wonderful. so little can separate the two. so much exists only in our heads and how we choose to perceive.

I completely agree, and I think it's too bad that our cultural conversation overlooks what happened re: #4 and #5. Whether he understood it or not going into this, being caught alive means his life is basically over now. God knows our society doesn't care about most lost young men (Steubenville being the exception- white athletes break the rules), but it's an important part of this story. I've been frustrated by the media coverage for its simplistic perspective and rhetoric that brings up bad memories of the last 12 years (this "enemy combatant" crap), but the lack of compassion for the perpetrators makes me exceptionally uncomfortable.
