Thanks to spiralngphoenix for the heads up: Cool Whip has changed their formula and it now includes milk. So for those milk/lactose sensitive, or those who avoid milk for personal or ethical reasons - please note that it now contains milk.

It was never vegan. Perhaps it was lactose-free, and now it's not, but I have avoided it ever since I became vegan. I suspect that sodium caseinate was always there; lactose-intolerant people are OK with that but vegans aren't.

Caseinate has been there for a while (as far as I know) - though sadly, not a lot of folks realize that's made from milk. I had to break that to a recently vegan friend of mine - that whole list of things which don't sound like they're from animals, but really are.
