You can just upload the picture into LJ and when you go to save it as an icon it will open up an editor so you can cut/crop/turn it into an icon.

Ooops.
I should write five times on the blackboard, "Ifer forgot when she checks her email and LJ on Drew's computer it automatically logs her into his LJ".
