Chosen vs. Unchosen

I've been reading a lot (or at least a few) fantasy books lately for girls and now I have feelings about Girls Who Are Special. I’m not dismissing them all with a "Mary Sue" label because they're not always written badly or as overly perfect. But there is a related wish fulfillment idea there. But I just never really related to that particular wish ( Read more... )

I'm like you: I tend to like, as someone put it above, the "Choosing Ones", and not so much the "Chosen Ones". Right now I'm translation one of those "fantasy books for girls", and, although the book is fun and the writing is not bad, I sometimes find the fairy tale clichés boring. (Boring! Boring!)

Heh--I think we were probably reading a similar type book and getting sick of it the same way!

That sounds really interesting--I have never met her! And I think that brings up a really good point, that maybe the kind of story I'm thinking of isn't just any story where fate takes a part (because any story with prophecies or psychics can have that), because there's a lot of ways people can respond to that kind of situation. Authors have a lot of freedom in terms of how many choices a character has.

He did it because he’s Bruce and Bruce is weird that way.

This line made me so happy! Yes! Yes and that's why I love him! Hee:) Go Bruce! And, I do believe, why SO MANY people have loved him, so much, for so long :) And you're absolutely right - What makes people love the character is that he chose, not that he was chosen.

I'm with you. If it was up to me, I would totally want to be in it because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. And I'd prefer to read stories about people like that, because underdog. More interesting than destiny because: free will and surprise!skillset. Often with an unusual approach, if we're lucky :)

Han is my favorite from Star Wars! *dreamy sigh*

It's funny, really, whenever anybody tries to put him in one of those 'the Waynes were always special' stories because nobody's ever like Bruce. Sure you can have Waynes that were successful, and it's cool when there's some that were obsession in different ways. But no, there just were not a line of people anywhere near Bruce. He's a great big weirdo. That's his secret. Only can only call him that if you love him. Because other people just don't get how much of a weirdo he is. His parents would be so proud. I love that one BatB comic where he's running around in his onesies and his mom tells him to go to bed and he's all melodramatic about it ( ... )
